Scratch DJ Mixers

Battling mixers with fade switches and great sound effects can help to make you the coolest DJ in your 'hood. Check out these terrific scratch mixers..... Scratch mixing is a mega trend within the club scene. One of the main things that will distinguish a scratch or battling mixer from a regular mixer is a fade switch that operates very smoothly and is located on an uncluttered panel. This allows a D.J. to flare all the way hitting any other controls. With scratch mixers starting at under $300, like the Numark DMX06 and the Vestax VMC004XL, new D.J.'s are able to refine their craft on a minimal budget. As their quality and demand increases they can upgrade to classic models like the Rane EMPATH or newer offerings like the Ecler EVO5. Starting with the entry level models minimal features usually include crossover fade, equalizer kill switches to mute various frequency ranges, two or more phono line inputs, output line for recording, microphone input, and built in effects. Today's base models allow innovative D.J.s' to achieve effects that were unobtainable to most a few short years ago. Moves like killing the mid-range and treble to scratch and vocalize over the bass track while doing a shout out and cross over fading into a new song are now old tricks. Higher end models add features like the ability to create and edit custom effects, extensive MIDI controls, multiple channel input and output processing, firewire controlled sound cards, and other advanced circuitry. Professional quality mixers can cost into the thousands. These more advanced models can produce truly stunning effects that are basically limited by the imagination of the artist. Studio quality mixing of 10 or more channels is often possible with high end scratch mixers.

One advantage of the scratch mixers is that they will function well as ordinary sound mixers, while 'normal' audio mixers are not likely to do well in the role of scratch mixing. With quality up and prices down, there has never been a better time to get into scratch mixing.
